We drove out to Mother Holly's yesterday. The coffee is good, the chocolate cake decadent and soup unlike most, interesting and tasty. But it was the lightly toasted farm bread that came with the soup that is going to take us back for another go at their menu.

I enjoy that drive and we will be doing it more often.

It's not just the dynamics of the town. Our economy is driven by tourism and principally from Europe. Businesses in town need to start coming up with ideas and above all else need to recognise that that the only way out of this whole is to start working together.

Have a look at a project we are running on http://www.askthelocals.co.za

I find your first two mentions bizarre as well. Tough times in Knysna and those locations are supreme challenges. I feel for any business person making a go of it but the dynamics of the town are changing rapidly and need to be taken into account.

In all fairness I went back for the first time in two and half years. We ordered the goujons again and this time we went back for another as the kids were still hungry. But I agree, what got to me was the grubby staff and worse still the grubby attitudes. That still rankles.

Nice location and as grubby as you say. But the troll that runs it is one of the most unpleasant people I have ever met. I have had to interact with more of these than most. I am used to them by now, can deal with the worst of them. But this one got right up my nose. I will never go near the place again. And I am not the only one. The Oyster Catcher has a bad reputation amongst many of the long time locals I have spoken to. It is not difficult to see why.

I have just rediscovered a very pleasant small eatery in Plett called the River Cafe which actually is right on a small river with plenty of reeds and trees to attract birds of all sorts, both flying and swimming. It is situated at the lower end of Wildwaters swimming pool and Slide in the Piesang Valley area and ideal for families as long as an adult supervises the water activities One can either sit on the Deck overlookings this attractive venue or at tables under the Pine trees. I had a late breakfast with Plunger Coffee (2 cups for the price of one!) at a very reasonable price and Kirsty told me she serves Sunday lunches for R38 - Roast with veg and rice plus a pud. If the breakfast is anything to go by this will be the best value on the Garden Route? Bookings are essentail for Sunday Lunch - 044-5333815/ 083 459 4550.
